Unique and Creative
Rock Gardens
(Also Called Xeriscape Gardens)

Xeriscape (Low Water) Landscaping
Is an Inexpensive Way to Make Your
Yard Unique and Attractive

Xeriscape yards and gardens come in all shapes and sizes . When a xeriscape landscaper is hired, he or she listens to the homeowner to determine how manicured or wild is desired. He then divides the ground into manageable sections, drawing out the plan on paper much like the first hand-drawn sketched done by an architect.

On one end of the spectrum, the garden is orderly with uniform pavers and rock walls. The plants are also orderly and balanced.

On the other hand, a landscaper doing xeriscape gardening can create a random look with a natural array of irregular stones and plants, giving the appearance that this beautiful back or front landscape was always there. The rocks and plants may appear to be helter-skelter when in reality they are carefully planned and placed. Wild Flowers

Whatever you choose, a well-planned garden will add life, beauty and value to your property for years to come.

Xeriscaping, sometimes mistakenly called called zeroscaping or xeroscaping, is not locked into one extreme or another. There are many degrees of orderly/random in between. Often the surroundings help to dictate the desired appearance. If the rest of the lawn is well manicured, an orderly xeriscape garden may be the best choice. Otherwise, the stark contrast may not be pleasing to the eye. Alternately, if a house is placed among trees and rock outcroppings, a very natural-looking rock garden would be appropriate.

Adding Rocks to Your Xeriscape Garden

Xeriscape gardens almost always include interestingly shaped rocks. Whether your xeriscape will be natural looking or formal will determine which type of rock your landscaper will choose. The contrast between the hard stones and the delicate-looking plants that will nestle up to them, makes this type of rock garden very attractive when properly done.

A xeriscape rock garden does not have to be expansive. It can be confined to a small area of the yard or several areas of the property. Their shape is usually irregular in order to give a natural look. Even a small plot of land can have a stunning rock and plant garden. Proportion of the size of the garden in relationship to the size of the lot should be taken into account.

Placement of your xeriscape is another thing to discuss with your gardener. During winter months when the homeowner spends most of his time indoors, a view of the garden from a window is appreciated. If the garden is to be placed under a window close to the house, drainage away from the house should be taken into account. A knowledgeable gardener will know how to do this. Rock Garden

There should be a proper balance between xeriscape plants and inanimate objects. such as tables, chairs, statues, large rocks, walls, etc. There should also be a division between where plants are free to grow and where people will be walking and sitting. Xeriscaping should be a place where wildlife and humans can enjoy each other.

Another consideration is the choice of plants - perennials versus annuals. Perennials are your wildflowers and grasses. Annuals, which last only one year, are usually added in the spring and summer to display vibrant color. They can also revive a tired-looking garden. A xeriscape landscaper is able to make the best choices and give the best advice.

The landscaper will take these five things into consideration:
plant and region
plant and site
plant and plant
plant and object
plant and human

Most homeowners do not know where to start when native plant landscaping. There are so many choices involved. This is where a professional xeriscape landscaper can get you off on the right foot. Redoing a garden that just doesn’t “fit” can be discouraging. Unless you’re a landscaper, hire some help, not only with the design but with the heavy lifting.

Getting Help Designing Your Xeriscape Garden

When your gardener helps you design your low-water landscape, he or she will take into account what your garden will look like year round. Since the plants change with the seasons, it’s important to consider what your garden will look like throughout the year. Your water conserving xeriscape landscape will continually change as the seasons change.

A successful xeriscape garden should look like a natural outcropping home for plants. Shrubs can be part of the picture, too. If the yard is small, you can have your garden placed against a wall or in the corner of two walls or fences.

Including a rock pool - even a small one - within the perimeter of the garden adds an amazingly eye-drawing touch. Added features could be cascading water or waterfall sliding or splashing down the rocks. A xeriscape gardener can explain the pond liner and water pump options to you.

Space will dictate how many plants you can have in your garden. Too many plants in a small space will look overbearing, cramped and cluttered. Bright color may be given by one or two small red or yellow plants. Plant placement is also a factor to be considered.

There’s a big difference between designing a xeriscape garden and taking care of one. The first requires the artistic abilities of an experienced landscaper. The other requires a nurturing spirit. Some people possess both but most do not. A xeriscape designer will help you get off to a good start. He has an eye for color, size, location, as well as the climate needed for each plant.

Three Important Things
